Art Access: Off The Map

Friday, 28 September 2012 16:44 Written by  Danica Farley

For an artist's perspective on famous—and curious—locales in downtown SLC head to Art Access Gallery. This unique exhibition displays artworks from 23 of Utah's most-loved creative types like Darryl Erdmann, Julia Milliken, Blake Palmer, Ian Ramsay, Steven K. Sheffield, Doug Wildfoerster, and more.

Planning for this city-inspired show began at a spring 2012 soiree sponsored by the Downtown Alliance. Each artist presented their dart throwing skills by aiming at a map...and wherever the dart landed became the location to inspire their creations. The boundaries were set between 2nd Avenue and 700 South, and 600 East to 700 West.

A few of my favorite pieces are Erin Berrett's striking portrayal of the brilliant staircase on the west side of Broadway Lofts and Squatters Pub Brewery, Sasha and Travis Tanner's mixed-media magic of Market Street, Michal Luch Onyon's whimsical Heavenly Jello at Temple Square, Steven K. Sheffield's handsome homage to North Temple, and Michelle McFarlane's photographic collage of 2nd Avenue and C Streets from Salt Lake City and other cities around the nation with the same address.

These artistically modified architectural gems found around town can be viewed in one place, for a brief amount of time, now through October 12, 2012.
