Just when you thought it had gone to the great beyond, The Sun Trapp will reopen under new management. Cindi Robinson, a veritable virtuoso in the local bartending industry has been hired to manage the space. The Sun Trapp closed and forfeited its DABS license just a few months ago, most thought it would be torn down. Some in the LGBTQ community were saddened, for others, it was more nostalgia for a long-ago golden age.

Frankly, we were in the second group. However, with Mrs. Robinson at the helm of this legendary establishment, we have hope it will return to its glory days. We’ll be first in line for the long island iced teas served in mason jars on the backyard patio for Sunday Funday! Opening is uncertain as DABS has more than a half dozen bars wanting a license... number of bar licenses currently available? Zero! (Also, we can’t mention The Trapp without a shout-out to the ghost of OG bar owner, and gay organizer, Joe Redburn, RIP).

Months ago, we reported a wild concept, Electric Fish was going to transform a massive space in The Gateway with a bitcoin-driven, immersive and experiential Japanese sushi nightclub.

It sounded ambitious, and honestly, we are much more excited about Ivy and Varley’s new idea for the space, Madre Cocina Barba. Slated to open in just a couple months, they’re promising Mexican coastal flavors in a modern cantina atmosphere. We’re expecting some fun Vibe dining; happily, no bitcoin necessary.

We also received word that the long-awaited animatronic tiki bar at The Gateway, Neptune’s Palace has received their liquor license, but the technical build-out is taking longer than expected. They’re now hoping for August.

Bananas for Boba!
Finally, Boba Guru has opened on Broadway next to Cupbop. An enticing Instagram AND instagrammable interior, this Vietnamese coffee, boba, and dessert shop should do very well. Just down the street, slinging boba across from Pioneer Park, inside The Olive apartments,  Sugar Spot will have opened by the time you read this… be the first to tell us what you think! .
